Jeremy Abig, chief financial officer at Wyndham Capital Mortgage for nearly 11 years, has been named the Charlotte Business Journal’s 2021 CFO of the Year for the large company category. A previous winner of the award, Abig took home the honor in 2012 in the small company category after less than two years as CFO of Wyndham Capital.
Finalists are selected based on their leadership and career achievements. All finalists were included in the CFO of the Year Special Report of the Charlotte Business Journal.
The past year, Abig and his team introduced a cloud-based industry-leading financial planning software to drive scale in a fiscally responsible manner. Abig launched a company-wide plan to adopt Workday Adaptive Planning, moving the once entrepreneurial-driven company with clunky and manual systems to a true agile national enterprise. In addition, Abig helped the company double its total dollars of loans originated to $5.4 billion in 2020 and has already surpassed that this year.
Abig credits some of his success to focusing on the long game and not just short-term wins. “Finding the right cultural fit is of the utmost importance for reaching the highest levels of career potential,” which Abig said is a main reason for joining Wyndham Capital.
He also advices others to use obstacles as stepping stones. “Don’t become discouraged by a career setback or detour. One step back can often lead to three or four steps forward,” he said.
Abig earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He began his career in the Finance Management Associate Program at Bank of America, where during his six years there he rotated through several divisions. He left to attend the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his MBA.
After graduate school, Abig worked at Wells Fargo Securities in Residential Mortgage and Consumer Structured Products. However, looking for an opportunity with a smaller company that focused on exceeding the expectations of every customer by delivering a superior value, Abig joined Wyndham Capital as controller and a member of the executive management team in November 2010.
Abig is responsible for all areas of accounting, finance and treasury at the company and is dedicated to helping Wyndham Capital become one of the top retail mortgage originators in the nation.
